Hong Kong Roji
+ SHIBUYA, TOKYO
Whether a ploy to avoid too much attention or just too busy to care, Hong Kong Roji does not exude either class or cleanliness. It does, however, exude a delightful aroma of classic Chinese fried noodles and juicy steamed dumplings into the street to catch pedestrians passing by. I stumbled upon this restaurant entirely by accident. Simply looking for a quick bite, I discovered what would become a monthly habit of great fried noodles and hot rice soup.
Hong Kong Roji has two locations, both in the Shibuya area, cozy and little. Expect to wait in a short line around dinner time. You’ll notice immediately that all of the staff speak Chinese to eachother, the first good sign of an authentic(well, semi-authentic) Chinese restaurant. Hinderances to it becoming truly authentic are the use of Japanese rice rather than Chinese rice in their dishes. Though not completely detrimental, I would prefer actual Chinese rice with it’s dry, flavor absorbing texture rather than the sweet and sticky Japanese equivalent(don’t get me wrong, Japanese rice in my opinion is still the best, but this is about authenticity, isn’t it?). The feeling inside is close to that of a Hong Kong street restaurant, with bottles of Chinese sake and sparsely placed red lanterns. Watch the chefs behind the counter to see them making their dumplings by hand from scratch.

The menu is sectioned off into rice soup(their specialty), then fried rice, ramen, and small dishes. Their specials are worth the visit. Taxi driver rice is a mix of seafood and vegetables in a hearty brown sauce over rice. Filling and a great quick meal. Their spareribs are piquant and succulent, though a little tricky at times getting around the bones. The real deal is their rice soup set. You get a big bowl of either chicken, beef or pork okayu and a big plate of their house fried noodles. A satisfying savory combination, only 1,150 yen. Don’t forget to try their sweet mango pudding after your meal!
