Pita the Great
+ TAMEIKE-SANNO,TOKYO

slow_fast_food.jpgHow can Tokyo compete with NYC without a great falafel joint? For the past year or so, my coworkers and I have been frequenting this little secret in Tameike-Sanno for their massive, satisfying lunches. I shouldn’t say “their,” since it’s a one-man team that runs the place. The menu is fairly straightforward, either the set, or à la carte. The set includes a drink, a pita, and a side menu item, all for 1,100 yen(a deal given the size). All menu items are 100% vegetarian with not a single trace of meat. The pitas come stuffed with your choosing of either falafel, fried pumpkin, fried mushrooms, or a variety of other prepared vegetables. The side dishes include vegetable croquets, hummus, falafel and a few other items. Everything is hand-made from scratch.

When ordering, you’re offered a pita with spice or without. With spice means a tasty hot sauce is added to your pita. After frequenting Pita for so long, I can honestly say I’ve made no mistakes ordering anything from the menu. Everything is fantastic, although very filling. I’ve walked away several times with no desire for dinner the same evening, those pitas are BIG. The side menu is just as exciting with crispy vegetable croquets and falafel. The hummus is rich and smooth and the perfect compliment for the great pita bread. Always a welcoming atmosphere and a pleasure to chat with Yuri, the friendly owner.

If you’re in the area, this is worth the effort to find. Not fast food, so make sure you’ve got some time since everything is prepared fresh. For those familiar with the National Azabu Supermarket, you may have seen Pita The Great’s pita breads for sale in their bakery section.
