+ YURAKUCHO, TOKYO

rice gruel setHot and cheap, two defining words for this Thai hideout. Just a short walk from BIC Camera in Yurakucho and along the train tracks will take you to an authentic Thai restaurant that will melt the roof off your mouth. With a set price of 630 for everything on the menu, this place was a bargain. The food is delicious and authentic, you can tell because there are actually Thai customers. Two things to note, immediately after ordering, they ask you to pay before bringing your food, maybe a tactic to avoid the chew-and-screw trick. Second, if it looks spicy on the menu, it is, in the hottest possible way.

The menu has the usual rundown of Thai favorites, from green curry to pad thai. What makes it special here are the stewed meats served over rice or over a thick rice soup. They offer a few kinds of stewed and boiled meats, the best(in my opinion) being the “mu-hon,” pork stewed in several kinds of spices. The rice soup, or as they label it, the “rice gruel combination” is also noteworthy. A large bowl of steaming rice soup is served with 6 small dishes of meats and vegetables. GREAT deal for 630 yen. Their fried fish with chili sauce was hot and nice as well.

No reservations needed, open for lunch and dinner and tastes great. Even better if you’re into HOT spicy food, this is the spot. The waitstaff is friendly and some speak English, the menu is also well labeled in English. Not a romantic place, but lots of fun and a great place for a drink and a great Thai dinner.
